Hi y'all -

We know, we know - who even uses bulletin boards anymore? Even our grandparents have moved onto Facebook, Twitter, and Google Buzz, apparently leaving bulletin boards in the dust. After a while of very little posting, we've decided to retire the Girlyman Bulletin Board.

The one group that has steadily maintained an interest in the board (spammers) has been a lot of work to deal with, and we're sorry to be denying them another venue for selling porn and Canadian medications.

We realize it's not an exact replacement for the board, but you can always come visit us at http://www.facebook.com/girlymanband.

Anyone have an extra ticket to the concert at Studio E in Sebastopol this Friday? I have a friend who really could use the night out for some good music but by the time I went to get her a ticket, the were all sold out. I can pay the price of the ticket, plus the $1 service fee if you bought it at the Last Record Store. Let me know if you have an extra ticket you'd be able to sell me.

My little girl (3yrs old) will be thrilled.....as will we.

This is far from perfect. There are some chords I had a very hard time figuring out, due to the lack of available live versions where the guitar is clearly audible or where there's video of Nate's left hand, and the dissonant electric guitar parts on the studio version don't really help in terms of hearing pure chords.

So first, the verses:

The verses (and, in fact, most of the song) are played entirely on D, G, and B strings of the guitar. Pluck all three on 1, then the G and B on 2-4, and pluck just the lowest (D) string on the third triplet of the third and fourth beats of each measure, so:

The chords are as follows (I'll leave out the strings you aren't supposed to play, so these are just D, G, B, in that order)

And you just play those eight chords, in that order, one measure each, for the entire verse, then

C#
(lead into the refrain)

In the one video, Nate appears to just play a barre chord there, but I think he's still only plucking three strings, so you can get away with xx666x for C#, or possibly x466xx, but that sounds a little too low.

The refrains might be:

However, I'm not entirely sure of that Bm, and the C may be an Am7. But again, playing only three strings, the chords actually are:

I'm very unsure of the first chords in each line, but Adim sounds OK. The Bm is also iffy, but I'm pretty confident of the other chords. (In the video, Nate seems to move up two frets between the B and the E, but a C# or a C#m just doesn't sound right there, so it's possible the chords changed between that performance and the studio recording.)

And I am assuming the ending is just like the bridge, since it has similar lyrics before it becomes a round.

I don't really like posting incomplete transcriptions, but I'm on the verge of giving up (I've listened to the same 20 seconds of the song about 100 times in a row now), so this is here in the hopes that someone else with more spare time or patience or membership in Girlyman will fill in the gaps (though if I discover something new I'll update this post.)

This is an extremely hard song to play for both hands. Some of the chord shapes (especially D/F#) are not easy to reach, and the right hand plucking part, while regular, is very painful on the fingertips if you don't usually pluck your guitar like that.

(It's also hard to sing, because the intervals are not common.)

Zaph, you are awesome! If it helps, I would recommend listening to a live version of the song, where Nate plays guitar alone while Ty and Doris sing.

Yup, that was a typo - in my own notes, I tend to leave out the notations on repeated phrases (so I can print them out on a single page), so I was adding that one in manually when I posted it. I've fixed it in the original post.

Zaph-- I actually just figured these chords out a few weeks ago and was about to post them, but you beat me to it! Mine are exactly the same as yours, so naturally I think it sounds perfect

I think I've finally got this one worked out. I've never seen them play it (have they ever?) but these chord shapes sound right, so I think the capo position is correct. Let me know if something sounds weird (or Ty, if you're reading this, let me know if I completely butchered your beautiful song)

* Em/D doesn't actually appear in the acoustic guitar part as played on the album - it's just a regular Em, with the bass playing D. Plus, Em/D is actually really hard to play anyway, so just play Em7 and it'll sound OK.
